Eastern Cape Primary School Receives an Off-Grid Non-Sewered Sanitation System

Project Information

Client

Water Research Commission (SASTEP programme)

Location

Khanyisani Primary School, Lubunde, Eastern Cape,

Industry

Capacity

1 250 L/d of black and basin water.

Requirement

A solution with uninterrupted power supply to treat wastewater from the toilet block for reuse as flushing water.

Top Challenges

Lack of Dignified Sanitation
Despite having toilets installed, the school made use of unsafe pit latrines due to a lack of a water connection.
Power Instability
The school, located in remote Eastern Cape, is affected by loadshedding and regular power interruptions due to its unstable power supply.

The result

  • The school has a constant supply of safe recycled water that can be used for the school’s flush toilets.

  • Sanitation at the school has been vastly improved.

  • The solar energy system ensures uninterrupted power supply.
The deployment of the NEWgenerator™ system, which connects the flush water of the school’s toilet block to a wastewater treatment system which recycles the treated water for toilet flushing, represents an important step forward for delivering dignified sanitation to remote and underserved areas in the country and across Africa.
