Successful contract award for Botswana’s new Kasane Water Treatment Works

Elephants in the water
During lockdown, Zhong Gan Engineering and Construction selected WEC Projects to be their specialist water treatment partner on a design and build tender for the Botswana Water Utilities Corporation, for Kasane Water Treatment Works, a new drinking water treatment plant in northern Botswana. As tourism is on the rise in Kasane, they require a new system to replace the smaller, older water treatment plant in the area.

Approached by the popular Botswana contractor, Zhong Gan, WEC Projects was successfully awarded a contract to complete a new custom-designed drinking water plant in Kasane. Along with other sub-contractors such as Bergstan South Africa, WEC Projects will be completing the full mechanical, electrical and telemetry scope of works for the plant.

WEC Roles and Responsibilities

The plant will use raw water from the Chobe River in Botswana. The biggest challenge is that the Chobe River, as well as with most surface water within Botswana, requires a proven and well-designed process to treat the water to the required standards.

In the selection and design of the treatment plant, the following unit operations will be used:

  • Coagulation
  • Flocculation
  • Lamella clarification
  • Sand and carbon filtration
  • Chlorine dioxide disinfection

The combination of these unit operations within the treatment process, will ensure the facility achieves the treatment objectives. WEC will also provide value engineering throughout the design and consultation phases, which will offer suggestions around the final delivery of the project. We strive to always improve the project, even from the design phase. Zhong Gan was able to successfully win the tender, along with nominated sub-contractors, WEC Projects and Bergstan.

WEC Projects will be completing the following in an EPC role:

  • Supply, construction, and commissioning of the full water plant
  • Project management and procurement (EPC role)
  • Detailed design
  • A portion of the process design
  • Full electrical design

Current Progress of the Project

This drinking water treatment plant project is a 30-month contract. Currently, WEC Projects is working alongside Bergstan for the engineering phase. On completion of the initial basic design, the WEC Projects engineering team will move into a detailed mechanical and electrical design process.

Future Targets of the Project

It is forecast that WEC Projects will move onto site in 9 to 12 months from now to start the mechanical and electrical installation. Commissioning will happen thereafter, prior to successful handover to the client.
