Landfills and
Leachate

WEC Projects has extensive experience in the treatment of landfill leachate and can design and construct a Leachate Treatment System specifically designed for your leachate.

Effective Landfills and Leachate Turnkey Solutions

WEC Projects define landfill leachate as all water that has been in contact with solid and liquid waste stored in a sanitary landfill.  Water percolates through a landfill and the resultant leachate is normally caught in the underground drainage system to prevent groundwater ingress.    Due to its large concentration of hazardous pollutants, it must be properly treated before being discharged to the environment.
The total amount of leachate generated by solid waste sanitary landfills
has reached 30 million tons per year.
Due to its complex chemical composition, the treatment of landfill leachate is typically particularly challenging.
WEC Projects have a multitude of processes for leachate treatment:
  • Fat, oil and grease removal technologies
  • Electro-coagulation
  • Dissolved Air Flotation
  • Oxidation using ozone and Fenton’s reagent
  • Aerobic biological treatment options: conventional activated sludge, sequential batch reactor and membrane bioreactor (MBR) technologies
  • Thermal evaporation
  • Ammonia removal and recovery by stripping and ion exchange adsorption
We can chemically analyse your leachate and conduct laboratory or pilot experiments to design and engineer a treatment system for your exact requirements. This allows us to provide the most cost-effective solution to treat leachate, thereby avoiding the purchase of unnecessary treatment equipment to safely discharge the treated water.
