Modular Effluent Treatment Plant for a Gold Mine in Mali

Project Information

Client

Gold Mine

Location

, West Africa

Capability

Industry

Capacity

150m3/h

Requirement

An effluent treatment plant to reduce high levels of arsenic in the raw pit water.

Top Challenges

Water Toxicity
Raw pit water on the mine contains high levels of toxic arsenic which must be reduced before safe reuse as process water or discharged into the environment.
Remote Location
Mine is located in a remote area of Mali.
Global Pandemic
COVID-19 pandemic introduced additional logistical challenges such as delays which resulted in tight deadlines.

The Result

  • The packaged plant design ensured that minimum site work was required.

  • The customised, two stage arsenic removal plant treats wastewater to the required dischargestandards, ensuring that it does not adversely affect the environment and that it can be reused as process water, reducing the overall water consumption of the mine.
The mining industry in Africa presents some very unique challenges, not the least of which are the remote locations of many of the mines and the difficulties experienced in getting staff and equipment to site where road, power and water infrastructure is often lacking.

How WEC Added Value

WEC water designed a customised solution which enabled the mine to address the complex wastewater quality. In addition, the containerised plant simplified transport logistics to the remote site and significantly reduce installation time on site

Customised
Solution

A customised solution was offered to address the client’s requirements.

Modular
Design

The modular design allows for future expansion.

Water
Reuse

Once treated, the discharge can be safely re-used for various mining processes, reducing the overall water consumption.

Water Processing Size Highlight

The plant effectively treats 150 m3/h of wastewater and reduces arsenic levels from 13 mg/L to less than 0.1 mg/L.

From the Client

“Multotec worked together with WEC Water on a project in Mali. It can be difficult to work in remote areas, but WEC Water stepped up to the challenge and was always ready with a solution. We will continue working with WEC Water to provide water solutions throughout Africa.”
